On behalf of my colleagues, I'd like to welcome you to the mathematics major at the College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography.
Mathematics is everywhere in life and is needed in most growing job fields in the 21st Century. The college's Bachelor of Science in Mathematics program provides the mathematical skills required to solve problems within the field of mathematics and other related disciplines. The math curriculum, which provides a solid core of pure and applied math courses, empowers you with the analytical, abstract reasoning and critical thinking skills that are required to enter a graduate program in mathematics or pursue a career in education, science, industry, or business.
I wish you the best in your academic career here at the college, and my colleagues and I look forward to meeting you in the near future.
Jason Gershman, Ph.D.

Why Choose This Major?
The American Mathematical Society promotes a large number of fields in which someone with a bachelor's degree in mathematics can be successful.
In a June 2009 study published by the Wall Street Journal, jobs in mathematics were named the best in the U.S. out of the 200 jobs studied. This was based on five main factors: environment, income, outlook, stress, and physical demands.
