Area(s) of Research

I currently hold an adjunct appointment at the University of Florida, where I am a Principle Investigator on a four year $400,000 research project entitled: Development of YY male technology to control non-native fishes in South Florida.  My team and I believe this approach to controlling invasive organisms has the potential to actually eliminate various existing fish invasions.

As a retired federal marine biologist, my research has been directed to fisheries management and what would be labeled applied research.

My past projects answer questions about how fishing pressures effect temporal, spatial and size distribution of fish populations.  This has allowed me to understand the dynamics of how and when Marine Protected Areas can be used to manage resources.

I have also researched marine fisheries and ecology, particularly how biotic and a biotic factors affecting fish distributions, abundances, sizes and growth rates.

Statement of Teaching Philosophy

I believe professors have an obligation to not only share knowledge but also to mentor students, which ideally will result in the student achieving a marketable skill as well as becoming a professional peer.
