Student Requirements for Graduation
Commencement Ceremony is scheduled for June 5, 2015 - 4:00 PM at the Don Taft University Center at NSU's main campus in Davie, Florida.
Approximately two months prior to commencement ceremonies, all eligible candidates will receive email instructions to proceed to the NSU Commencement Web site that contains comprehensive ceremony information. Candidates will be instructed to log on to a secure site, submit an electronic Commencement Participation Form (CPF), and order their caps and gowns directly from the NSU Bookstore vendor Oak Hall Cap & Gown. Completing a CPF reserves a space in the appropriate commencement ceremony. Candidates should refer often to NSU's Commencement Web site for updated and additional information.

Master's Student Requirements
You are eligible to participate if you: Finished your degree requirements in 2013 and did not attend last year's commencement, finish your degree requirements by the end of Summer 2014, or be within six months of completion of their degree and have their advisors approval.
Each student should receive the following gown and hood:
Master's of Science- Gray gown with bright gold hood.
Master's of Arts- Gray Gown with white hood.
Doctoral Student Requirements
You are eligible to participate if you: Finished your degree requirements in 2013 and did not attend last year's commencement, will finish your degree requirements by the end of Winter 2014, or be within six months of completion of their degree and have their advisors approval.
All doctoral candidates are required to wear the doctoral deluxe gown (shown on right), which is available to purchase or rent from Oak Hall. Please note: Candidates that come with the old black gowns will be sent to the NSU Bookstore kiosk to purchase an official NSU gown. Doctor of Philosophy Ph.D. - Doctoral deluxe gown with a royal blue hood.
Preparing for Degree Conferral
You will not receive an official diploma at the commencement ceremony. At the ceremony you will be called to the stage and announced as a candidate for graduation. At that time, you will receive a certificate of congratulation.
To receive an official diploma, if you have not already received one, you must complete the following:
- Successfully defend your degree.
- Submit an Application for Degree form and pay a diploma fee.
- Submit a minimum of 3 capstone/thesis copies to Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography library (including signature pages and electronic copy).
- Return any keys to the program office.
Preparing for Commencement
The information retrieved for your Commencement Participation Form will come directly from your NSU student record. If discrepancies appear, proceed to your SharkLink account, or fax corrections to (954) 262-2915. When faxing your correction, reference your NSU ID, and sign the request. It is also helpful to include a daytime phone number in case there are any questions or problems. For discrepancies with your major, please contact the Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography program office.
The cost of regalia (cap, gown, hood and tassel), which is considered your participation fee for attending commencement, varies according to the degree attained. The Master's regalia costs ($90.00, plus taxes) and are yours to keep. Doctoral candidates may either rent ($164.00, plus taxes) or buy ($992.00, plus taxes) their deluxe regalia. Please refer to the NSU Commencement Web site or purchase deadlines. For questions regarding regalia, call the NSU Bookstore at (954) 262-4750.
Only the prescribed regalia purchased through the NSU Bookstore is acceptable for the NSU Commencement ceremonies. If you have purchased regalia through another source, please reserve it for your personal use on other occasions.
Things to Consider During Your Academic Career
While completing your course work at the Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography, please keep the following points in mind:
- Notify the program office when you are repeating a class for a better grade
- Refer to your course catalog for additional information

- How long do the ceremonies last?
Ceremonies have averaged three hours in previous years.
- Do my guests need tickets?
Yes. Candidates will receive information about tickets with their Commencement Participation Form invitation, approximately two months before their ceremony. Because seating is limited in the Don Taft University Center, all guests will need a ticket to enter the arena area to view commencement. It is important to also remember that commencement seating is on a first-come, first-served basis and large groups of guests wishing to sit together should arrive one hour prior to the start of the ceremony because saving seats is not permitted.
- Is there a rehearsal prior to the ceremony?
No. Candidates should arrive at the site one hour prior to the ceremony so that you can be placed in your group and given instructions.
