A Word from the Department Chair
Welcome to the biology major at the College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography. I am one of the many professors who teach and support biology offerings at the college. We have a very diverse group of professors, teaching a variety of courses that comprise biology. The biology faculty would welcome the opportunity to help and answer any of your questions.
Please review the details of the biology major, and contact me if you have any questions.

Why Choose This Major?
The mission of the biology major at the College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography is to provide students with a solid educational background in the sciences and humanities. This strong foundation in biological and physical sciences is designed to prepare the student for graduate work in health professions and natural sciences.
- Protection and sustainability of ecosystems and natural resources—Human society is ultimately dependent on the natural world for ecosystem services and biological resources, e.g. fresh water, and clean air.
- Social health—Biology, including evolutionary biology and medicine, help us to understand major health issues as they become more urgent.
- The biological sciences are some of the fastest growing areas of science in business and industry, and this will only increase as the century unfolds.
