Seat Turtle Information

Sea Turtles

Sea turtles are ancient and pre-date the dinosaurs from 245 million years ago. Archelon is an example of ancient sea turtle that lived during the Cretaceous period and roamed the waters alongside dinosaurs. Archelon was much bigger than the largest sea turtles alive today. These sea turtles could be up to 13 ft long, with a 16 ft wide wingspan from flipper to flipper and could weigh around 5,000 pounds!

Now, our current sea turtles today are very different from their ancient relatives, however they do have many other important similarities. There are seven species of sea turtles worldwide that managed to survive to modern times, inhabiting every ocean. All sea turtle species are considered either threatened or endangered.
